Arbios Cellars/Praxis Cellars: Quick Pivot Turns Would-Be Veterinarian into Artisan Winemaker Focused on Terroir

Bill Arbios' childhood dream of being a veterinarian quickly turned nightmare when during a summer job with a veterinarian he discovered how many animals suffer neglect.
As a second-year UC Davis student, now uncertain about his career ambitions, Bill stumbled upon an "Introduction to American Wine" class and was quickly smitten. Bonus! Winemaking utilizes the hard sciences of his veterinarian-focused studies.
After 20 years experience making wine and consulting for some of the best-known wineries in the Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Central Coast regions, Bill and his wife Susan launched the Arbios Cellars label.
Arbios Cellars exclusively offers handcrafted Cabernet Sauvignon made in the traditional Bordeaux style. The Arbios grapes hail from one of the highest, northernmost vineyards in Sonoma's Alexander Valley, where dire growing conditions threaten their lives without fail, season in and out. Yet the very struggle for life provides these grapes with dynamic, complex character.
Bill and Susan launched their more modestly priced Praxis Cellars label in 2000. "Praxis" stems from a Greek word meaning "practice." Because Bill's winemaking emphasizes terroir, the Praxis label allows Bill to discover new terroirs and work to achieve the best representation of their unique expression.
Whether Arbios or Praxis, Bill's wines honor the fruit's character, and his winemaking style consistently demonstrates elegance, grace and power, which is probably why he's developed a bit of a cult following.
