Story-book Romance Leads to Artisan Wines with Passion, Adventure and Integrity
It sounds like something straight out of a 1940s movie.
Shortly after returning from working the harvest in Australia, Dylan Sheldon chanced upon Tobe Weatherly at the Carmel wine bar he helped open. It took one kiss, and five weeks later they were engaged.
That happy ending was only the beginning of a storied winemaking adventure that starts with the couple selling their modest possessions and traveling the world to make wine in New Zealand and France. In 2002, Dylan and Tobe returned to California, where they lived in an abandoned winery and painstakingly searched for the perfect vineyards. In 2003, with just 420 cases, the Sheldons produced their first vintage.
The Sheldons call themselves a "micro-winery." They use words like "yummy" and "damn good" to describe their wines, which are made from sustainably farmed, hand-harvested grapes that are basket-pressed. Ever humble, yet committed to each other and their vision, the two refuse outside investors and often pull 90+ work weeks. They call their tasting room the "Sippy Lounge," and many nights Tobe can be found closing the place down with new fans who that day have discovered the Sheldons' soulful wines.
Hand-crafted. Hand-bottled. Hand-labeled. The Sheldons truly are hands-on with their limited production, award-winning Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Graciano, Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and proprietary red and white blends. They believe great artisan wines derive from small details and that their "micro" size enables them to give razor-sharp focus to the subtle nuances that each vine offers.
